SESAI performs more than 38K dental procedures in 2020
Caring for oral health is part of the routine of the 755 thousand indigenous people who live in more than six thousand villages all over the country. The Multidisciplinary Indigenous Health Team (EMSI) carries out collective and individual actions in the base centers, mobile dental units or in portable dentists´ offices. In 2020 alone, SESAI performed more than 38,000 dental procedures.
"Depending on the region, we use a technique called ART, which is an atraumatic technique. We can do restorations, which are great, perfect and without the use of a motor, chair, compressor and electricity," explained dentist Raíza Vieira, who works at the DSEI Yanomami.
Currently, more than 920 oral health professionals work in the 34 Special Indigenous Sanitary Districts (DSEI). During the consultations, dental restorations, sealants, periodontal scaling, and extractions are performed.
Many times these treatments are carried out in areas of difficult access and, after years of work to raise awareness about the importance of oral health, there is no more resistance from the indigenous people. "We have been working with them for almost 20 years and there has been a great evolution in the treatment that SESAI offers to all these indigenous people. They love it when we arrive with the equipment to perform the treatments", explained the DSEI Guamá Tocantins´ technical responsible for oral health, João Batista Vasconcelos.
João Bastista tells that only there, in the DSEI Guatoc, there are 18 teams to serve 19,000 indigenous people in the Amazon regions with difficult access. The professionals are dentists, oral health assistants, who are normally indigenous, and indigenous health agents (AIS). "We literally carry the portable equipment on our backs because access is extremely difficult," he said.
In addition to the treatments, health professionals also work in educational activities. In collective actions, the indigenous people receive hygiene kits with toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss.
