Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo DSEI intensify actions to confront COVID-19
The Special Secretariat of Indigenous Health (SESAI) of the Ministry of Health, through the Indigenous Special Health District (DSEI) of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, has been intensifying the fight against the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in indigenous areas. The DSEI has held meetings in person and by videoconference with indigenous leaders, the Indigenous Health District Council (Condisi) and the District Crisis Committee to draw up strategies for action in the field.
The Base Centers were supplied with medicines, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for the 27 Indigenous Health Multidisciplinary Teams (EMSI) that work in the area and dental supplies and hygiene kits for the local communities. The District also conducted training with the teams on the use of PPE, which is mandatory in patient care.
A District Rapid Response Team (ERR), composed of a doctor, nurses, and nursing technicians, is visiting the villages in search of patients with flu-like symptoms of COVID-19.
An Indigenous Primary Care Unit (UAPI) has been set up at an indigenous school at the Agua Boa Base Center to attend to mild or suspected cases of COVID-19. The unit was equipped with rapid tests for COVID-19, PPEs, pressure meter, etc. Before starting operation, the UAPI was cleaned and sanitized.
"We are working on behalf of the indigenous peoples and health teams. We have held weekly meetings, emergency purchases of hygiene kits, masks, aprons, among others, so that they can be sent to the frontline teams. We are fighting an invisible enemy and we will come out winners with faith and determination," says the Coordinator of the Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo DSEI, Ricardo Angelo.
In addition, the EMSI continue to carry out routine actions of basic health care for more than 17,000 indigenous villagers in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo. Vaccinations, home visits to hypertensive and diabetic people, gestational and infant follow-up, and replacement of medication for continuous use are carried out, among other actions.
