Active Search: Indigenous Health Teams take vaccines to areas of difficult access
The Special Secretariat of Indigenous Health (SESAI), of the Ministry of Health, has already vaccinated against COVID-19 more than 73% of the indigenous people over the age of 18, assisted by the Indigenous Health Care Subsystem (SASISUS) and specificities of ADPF 709, with the first dose and 55% with the second dose. Although some villages are located in areas of difficult access, the Multidisciplinary Indigenous Health Teams (EMSI) of the 34 Special Indigenous Health Districts (DSEI) do not measure efforts to locate those who have not yet been vaccinated.
The good vaccination rates of the indigenous people are a reflection of the relentless work of the EMSI in less than three months of the immunization campaign against COVID-19, which started on January 18th. If the indigenous person is not found at the time of vaccination or has any impediment to take the vaccine, such as presenting flu symptoms, for example, there is no need to worry because the DSEI teams periodically return to the villages. "Despite the heavy rains that are affecting, mainly, the North and Midwest regions, the work now is active search. It is to knock from house to house and invite people to get vaccinated", explains the Special Secretary of Indigenous Health, Robson Santos da Silva.
Many Districts have already reached or are close to reaching the 90% vaccination target against COVID-19 stipulated by the National Immunization Program (PNI). Among the indigenous populations, those of recent contact have a high rate of immunization. The DSEI Porto Velho, for example, has already immunized 94% of the three ethnicities of recent contact. Meanwhile, the DSEI Guamá Tocantins managed to immunize 98% of the Zoé population, another recently contacted ethnic group, with two doses of the immunizer.
In addition to the vaccine against COVID-19, the Federal Government continues to take basic health care to the more than 755,000 indigenous people in more than 6,000 villages throughout the country.
